Description
The purpose of this classification is to perform a variety of skilled maintenance tasks including the installation, maintenance, and repair of a utility system, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting and heating and air conditioning repair. Positions in the Gas Department are subject to 24-hour call.
Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and high school diploma or GED.
Examples of Duties
Receives work orders; maintains related records on work performed; stocks trucks and vehicles with equipment, tools and materials needed to complete work.
Performs skilled plumbing duties; troubleshoots various plumbing systems, including flush valves and water and sewer lines; makes necessary repairs; unclogs sinks, toilets and urinals; performs maintenance on drinking fountains.
Repairs leaks on faucets, drains, pumps, hot water tanks, piping and valves; repairs piping, hose, fittings, adapters, couplings, broken valves and wood components.
Performs skilled carpentry duties; constructs forms; hangs doors; installs door closures and hardware; repairs damaged dry wall, plaster, roofing, doors and broken tiles; repairs or replaces window frames broken windows.
Performs HVAC activities; inspects air conditioning units to ensure efficient operation; performs regularly scheduled maintenance on heating and cooling units; diagnoses minor mechanical and/or electrical malfunctions; installs, replaces, or repairs damaged equipment as appropriate; calibrates thermostatic controls.
Performs electrical maintenance activities and routine repairs; unloads, sorts and stacks transformers; climbs poles to connect services and fix street lights.
Performs skilled tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and installation of the natural gas distribution system.
Performs other related maintenance duties including painting, landscaping, tree trimming, limb removal, sanitation tasks, routine vehicle maintenance and cleaning and event set-up/clean-up.
May perform pole installation and maintenance tasks; assists in digging holes for pole installation; holds and aims poles; sets anchors; pulls equipment, wires and materials up poles for installation; installs ground rods.
Estimates time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisitions materials as required.
Uses and operates a variety of hand and power tools in the area of work assigned; operates bucket-trucks, fork-lifts and related equipment to complete tasks.
Ensures compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations.
Typical Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; sufficient skilled maintenance experience in area of assignment, such as electrical, natural gas, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry and related areas; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Specific training or certification in specialized trade may be required.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid driver's license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification. Must possess and maintain any state or federal certifications required in the field of assignment.
Positions in:
Electric Distribution Department will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana CDL-B commercial driver's license within five (5) months of hire.
Maintenance of Public Buildings Department will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana Class D driver's license within one (1) month of hire.
Zoo Department will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana Class D driver's license within one (1) month of hire.
Gas Department must obtain certifications required by the Office of Pipeline Safety within six (6) months of hire.
Water Department requires a valid State of Louisiana Water Distribution Class I certification.
